Elderberry has been used to treat illnesses such as cold and flu. Some evidence suggests that chemicals in elderberries may help reduce swelling in mucous membranes, including the sinuses, and help relieve nasal congestion. Elder may have anti-inflammatory, antiviral, anti-influenza, and anticancer properties.Elderberry also contains flavonoids, which have antioxidant properties
Elderberries have been used traditionally, and in some observational and clinical studies, as supportive agents against the common cold and influenza. Elderberry extract has beneficial effects on physical, especially respiratory, and mental health. Data suggest a significant reduction of cold duration and severity in air travelers. More research is warranted to confirm this effect and to evaluate elderberry's physical and mental health benefits.
Zakay-Rones et al (2004) reviewed the efficacy and safety of oral elderberry syrup for treating influenza. Sixty patients suffering from influenza-like symptoms for 48 h or less were enrolled influenza season. Patients received 15 ml of elderberry or a placebo four times a day for 5 days. Symptoms were relieved on average 4 days earlier in those receiving elderberry extract compared to placebo. Elderberry extract seems to offer an efficient, safe and cost-effective treatment for influenza.
